Bored in Heaven?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

About a month ago, I received an email. The question was simple: If we will be spending all our time praising God in heaven, won’t we be bored?

I gave my normal answer, but began thinking…there is more to this question than just the glory, majesty and beauty of God.
Three times in my life I could have, and should have, been dead. Once my parents were told I had little chance to live. I am not dead! Two other times, after doctor’s appointments, I was found to be a few weeks or months from a battle for my life. The problem was corrected, and I am not dead…and did not have to go through the battle.
But, one thing is sure…at one time I was spiritually dead. I knew God…but was not his friend.
Six known times I faced the reality/probability of death. Someone drew me to himself through his life, compassion and truth. But, it was not just someone…it was God himself. He died for me, so I would be honored to go through a different battle in my life…the kingdom victory battle. This glorious, victory celebration of appreciation will continue through all eternity.

On what evidence?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

We have convinced ourselves that most folk are just not interested in the church…and we are right. Church is irrelevant to many. But on what evidence have we come to the conclusion that folk are not interested in the Gospel? Do we think the Romans, Greeks and pagans were interested in joining a church?  Why would they be?  In their eyes, the NT church was merely another cult! They became interested when they heard the Gospel.
In a recent national survey, only 17% of those who responded attended any church at least once a month.  50% said they would be willing to talk to someone about Christianity.

Folk are drawn to the Gospel…not to the church! “But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself’”

Hate, anger and disruption

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009
It happened to a friend, but reflects what is surely coming!
There have been a lot of stories floating around, so I talked directly to two of the men involved. For the last 8 years a friend and two other men have dedicate one Sunday a month to join in the assemblies for believing inmates in an area prison. On this day one other man had joined them. About sixty inmates had gathered for the assembly. A dozen other inmates asked if they could join this time of worship and encouragement.
As one of the believing inmates started reading the opening scripture, one of the special dozen asked if questions could be asked. Immediately, it was clear the special dozen were not there to listen and learn…and the animated, rude, crude disruption started.
One of the four men kindly reminded the special dozen that this was a period of worship and encouragement, and not a time for challenge and debate. When the lone guard heard the yelling, she stepped in and calmed the special dozen…temporarily. Later, my friend had to remind the special dozen again. Even one of the inmate believers talked to the disruptors.
As the communion was being passed, the leader of the special dozen grabbed the plate of bread, dumped it in his lap and said “Eat this!” Then other members of the special dozen confronted the four men calling them Satan worshipers, white pigs and evil. The special dozen vowed to stop the preaching about Jesus.
If you have already guessed…you may have been wrong. The Prison administration said they were not Muslims, but the inmates said they were. Either way we have a problem.
The reaction of the four men involved was not fear or anger, but joy that they were honored to be persecuted for the sake of the gospel…and compassion for their persecutors.
This happened in a controlled prison environment and my friend said he never thought they were in real danger. Another of the four expressed the idea that if the guard had not been there, the special dozen could have harmed or killed them before back-up could arrive.
In this case, hatred and anger were tempered by the reality that violence would have left the special dozen in serious trouble. But, to zealots, hatred and anger have been known to trump reason!
There are three reasons for relating this story:
   1. We are in a real, deadly war. Our enemy is represented by Islam which is in attack mode, but there are other dangerous threats.
   2. The Spirit gave us the serious commission to take the Gospel to our world, and the world…knowing it would be a difficult, demanding, dangerous assignment. But, he does not leave us defenseless, helpless and clueless.
   3. The third reason was stated by one of the men involved in the story above…”Any faith that is not deeply rooted in Jesus will not survive the future when the attacks come.” Thankfully we have all we need to win this war. ”The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (II Cor.10:4,5).
Persecution/Discipline misunderstandings

Persecution mean to pursue,  put to flight or drive away. To further explain, the Greek word pursue means to chase with the purpose of bringing something to an end. In Acts 11:18 persecution is translated tribulation. Persecution comes from an outside source…intent on destruction.
This is important because many of us have the idea that any trouble we have, including God’s discipline, is persecution. God does not persecute his people! Discipline is temporarily painful, but produces a harvest of righteousness and peace. Through discipline God patiently calls us back to self-control and a sound mind.
Is the reason we are not being persecuted…because we are no threat?
When we compare our lives with the world…can the world see a difference? Many folk live decent, moral lives. When we speak, does the world hear a different language based on the hope found in the Gospel?

Post-Christian Era!?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Where is the evidence…not that we are in a Post-Christian Era, but the evidence that we have every been in a Christian Era?

The truth is, even though there are many Christians in the United States, it was not built on Christianity. It was built on the belief that there is one God, and he cares for us. The founders made it clear that a national religion was dangerous…and unwelcome!

Some say the United States is founded on Judaea-Christian principles, but this doesn’t work very well either. Judaism and Christianity are very different…with apposing standards.
The Jewish religion was not for all nations. Its sacrifices and ceremonial laws were a standard given to one small nation…for a specific purpose. Obeying the law was required for all Israelites (Jews). This concept is diametrically apposed to the state-religion standards of the United States.
Christianity is a spiritual relationship with God, transcending all borders, and answering to a universal king (Jesus)…with high standards and expectations. Where is this in the constitution of the United States?

But, you say, it was build on principles found in the 10 comandments. The evidence for this idea is stacked against this assumption.
    1. Anyone can worship anything at any time.
    2. There is no prohibition on making idols.
    3. Blaspheming the name of God is not a crime.
    4. Why should we remember the Sabbath when it is for Jews only?
    5. Honoring ones father and mother is not mandated?
    6. Murder has been a part of our society from the beginning. At times disguised as Justice, vengeance or abortion.

    7. There is no specific legal penalties against adultery and fornication for consenting adults. Even prostitution is legal, or winked at, among us.
    8. Stealing is wrong…unless you have clever attornies or become a politician. Robin Hood is a national hero!
    9. Telling little white lies, or an occasional whopper, are ingrained in our culture.
  10. Covetousness is encouraged under the banner of progress.

Although the 10 commandments are not listed as part of Christianity, Christianity has even higher standards concerning these issue.
But, in the United States, decency standards are being lowered…so more can be counted as decent.
It seem the folk in the United States are disturbed and frustrated…ready for change they can believe in. And, if they are not genuinely ready,
we have no excuse for not telling the Good News to our damaged, troubled, temporary homeland. The only hope is revival.
Our message should be that we are in the Pre-Christian Era…and act like we believe it.
